What the Illawarra adds to an interstate move
Wollongong to Sydney (90 km)
The M1 Princes Motorway is the main route north, rising via the Bulli Pass before joining the F6 Extension at Waterfall. The single-road nature of the Pass means that a truck breakdown or holiday traffic can add 30-60 minutes each way. We plan for two crossings (loaded southbound, empty northbound or vice versa) when pricing the job. The F6 Extension toll is payable in both directions.
Wollongong to Melbourne (870 km)
The standard route is M1 north to Sydney, then M31 Hume Highway south to Melbourne. Some loads go M1 south through Nowra and the Princes Highway, adding 60-90 minutes but avoiding Sydney congestion for a southbound drop. We quote the M1-Hume route as default; ask about the Princes Highway option for flexibility. Total drive time is 9-10 hours; plan for a two-day job for a full household.
Wollongong to Canberra (173 km)
South Nowra interchange to the Kings Highway, or M1 north and Federal Highway south from Goulburn. The Kings Highway route is shorter but crosses the Clyde Mountain (steep grades, chain-up area in winter). The Hume-Federal Highway route adds 40 km but is better for a loaded truck in winter. We quote the safer route and note the Kings option for summer/dry moves.
Wollongong to Brisbane (1,000 km)
M1 north through Sydney, then the Pacific Highway/M1 to Brisbane or the New England Highway for a more inland option. A full Brisbane job is a two-day drive. Backloading (sharing a truck heading north) is a realistic cost reduction for flexible-date moves: Wollongong-to-Brisbane backloads run regularly because the Sydney-Brisbane corridor is one of the busiest in the country.
